Instrument Tuner

Overview

A chromatic tuner that gets low notes right. On a bass, a low guitar string or most reeds, the harmonics are often louder than the note itself, and many tuners jump an octave just as you're trying to tune. This one uses YIN pitch detection, which follows the period of the sound, so that doesn't happen. The needle is smoothed and holds between plucks, so it settles like a real one. Set the reference anywhere from 415 to 450 Hz.

Tune a guitar or bassIt's chromatic, so any tuning works: drop D, open G, five-string bass.

How it works

Allow the microphone

It only asks when you press the button, never on load.

Play a note

You see the note name and how many cents sharp or flat it is.

Watch the needle

Turn the peg until the needle sits in the marked band, which means within five cents.

Frequently asked

Which instruments does this work with?

Anything that plays a pitched note: guitar, bass, violin, cello, ukulele, brass, woodwind or voice. It's chromatic, so it finds whatever note you play.

Why does it not jump an octave like other tuners?

It uses YIN, which follows the repeating period of the sound instead of its loudest frequency. On basses, low guitar strings and many reeds, the harmonics are louder than the base note, so other tuners often show the wrong octave. This one doesn't.

Can I tune to something other than A440?

Yes. Set the reference anywhere from 415 to 450 Hz: 415 for baroque, 442 or 443 for many European orchestras.

Is anything recorded?

No. The sound is analysed as it comes in and then thrown away. Nothing is stored or uploaded, and the microphone turns off when you stop.
