Overview

A chromatic tuner that works on the periodicity of the note rather than on the loudest thing in its spectrum. That distinction matters more than it sounds: on a bass, a low guitar string, or almost any reed, the second or third harmonic is often louder than the fundamental, and an FFT-peak tuner reads those and jumps an octave exactly when you are trying to hold a tuning. YIN follows the period, so a missing fundamental costs it nothing. The reading is smoothed in the frequency domain and briefly held through the gaps between plucks, so the needle settles the way a physical one would instead of twitching. Reference pitch is adjustable from 415 to 450 Hz for baroque tuning, continental orchestras, or anything else.

Which instruments does this work with?

Any that produce a pitched note — guitar, bass, violin, cello, ukulele, brass, woodwind, voice. It is chromatic, so it finds whatever note you play rather than expecting a particular tuning.

Why does it not jump an octave like other tuners?

Because it uses YIN, which detects the repeating period of the waveform rather than the loudest peak in its spectrum. On instruments whose fundamental is weaker than their harmonics — most basses, low guitar strings, many reeds — a peak-picking tuner reads the harmonic and reports the wrong octave. Period detection does not.

Can I tune to something other than A440?

Yes. The reference is adjustable from 415 to 450 Hz — 415 for baroque pitch, 442 or 443 for much of continental Europe, and anything in between.

Is anything recorded?

No. Audio is analysed frame by frame and discarded. Nothing is stored or uploaded, and the microphone is released when you stop.
